FERAL WINTER OUTDOOR ARTS RESIDENCY

ADRENALISM

BACKGROUND

Feral and Beacon Art Centre are collaborating on a new outdoor arts residency aimed at Scotland based artists interested in developing outdoor or site-specific projects responding to the urban landscape.

Both Feral and Beacon Art Centre have a track record of programming and producing dynamic artistic work for outdoor contexts. This collaboration stems from an interest in stimulating resources for artists to cultivate and present artistic work that happens out-with the limits of physical buildings and offers a lens to re-imagine public space.

Feral’s Winter Residency is in partnership with Beacon Arts Centre for artists interested in creating work in response to urban spaces suitable to be performed in Winter.

2022-23 RECIPIENT: ADRENALISM

Adrenalism is a new performance company making outdoor and walkabout theatrical experiences for audiences of all kinds in places of all kinds. We make work that is entertaining, accessible and is connected to the world we all live in. We strongly believe that the best performances happen with diverse audiences in unexpected places and unexpected ways.

Hi -Vis stand out brightly in our eyeline; full of concrete, brick, green-yellow foliage and brown-grey trees- they are in stark contrast to our world. We can be seen yet we are separate. We beam authority- “We are meant to be here. We are visible. We belong.”

We want to re-look at Hi -Vis materials and see them again as if for the first time, with curiosity and wonder. What does this material and its unique properties tell us about the world we have pulled around ourselves?

These materials sit incongruously; they are fundamentally synthetic and unnatural, made from petrol, plastic and fossil fuels and yet they can in so many ways keep us safe and protect us. Hi-Vis adorns paramedics, policemen, workmen, and cyclists stay safe and visible. Hi -Vis stand out brightly in our eyeline; full of concrete, brick, green-yellow foliage and brown-grey trees- they are in stark contrast to our world. We can be seen yet we are separate. We beam authority- “We are meant to be here. We are visible. We belong.”

Let’s reimagine the silhouette of the high vis wearer:

Perhaps ridiculous but sculpturally shaped hi-vis beings emerge, moving to a different rhythm not defined by the beat of the street
