CHANGING CHANNELS

BY SAFFY SETOHY

April – July 2021

Creative Communities: Artists in Residence is a Glasgow-wide initiative, funded by Glasgow City Council and delivered by Glasgow Life, bringing artists in residence to every ward of the city.

Changing Channels was a creative project led by local artist in residence for Canal Ward, Saffy Setohy, in collaboration with visual artist Margaret Kerr, dance artist Lizzie Rawes, and producers Feral Arts.

Working alongside communities in Canal Ward, Changing Channels explored the regeneration of the Forth and Clyde Canal, and our changing relationship with it. There were been two main elements to the project:

●   Saffy and Lizzie facilitated an online workshop series in collaboration with an intergenerational group of local women. The workshops were accompanied by activity packs designed by Margaret and Saffy, to invite new ways of experiencing the local canal environment, through multi-sensory and mindful creative practices. During the workshops there were discussions about our relationship to nature and the urban environment, regeneration, gentrification, rewilding and care.

●   The artists are also facilitating a workshop series at Hamiltonhill Claypits Nature Reserve with class P6 from St. Theresa’s Primary School in Possilpark. The series explores our relationship with the environment through multi-sensory exercises, meditation, historical research and engages with the UN Goals for Sustainable development.

The workshops generated drawings, writing, photography, rituals and collections of objects which were curated into an exhibition for the communities of Canal Ward to enjoy at Lambhill Stables from 2nd – 15th July 2021.
